New Adventure!

First Fabric Yard

Hello everyone! O.k., I know I posted this picture the other day on Instagram, but I recently had a couple people ask me some questions about how in the world I printed my own fabric. So, I thought I may as well chit-chat about it a little here on the blog. Back story: I’m really interested in exploring the world of surface pattern design and am only just starting to experiment with some simple designs and color combinations. I have to admit, I’m nervous about dipping even one little toe into this world. It’s harder than it looks! But, oh, is it fascinating! I’m blown away by so many of the incredibly talented surface pattern designers out there.

So, to start my adventure, I decided to try to print my design through a company called Spoonflower. In the process, I learned a whole lot more about printing to fabric and how color can differ from one type of fabric to another. Although similar, it’s certainly not quite the same as printing to paper and that whole 4-color process/pantone thing. That’s just a whole other beastie with all of it’s own quirks and pitfalls! After some trial and error and with the help of a very patient Spoonflower staff member (thank you, again! I hope you’re not having nightmares about me!) I am very pleased with my first design. From here, I hope to take off and start trying my hand at some more sophisticated/complex design work, but for now I’m going to continue to work on baby steps. Maybe some day Kate and Louie Handmade will be offering items only from my own custom designed fabric! Ah, dare to dream! In the mean time, what do you think I should make from my first yard?

Custom Design: Fancy Bird Pillow

CustomDesign_pillows1Hello! Happy Wednesday, everyone! Today I’d like to share some images of a special project I worked on earlier this summer. My friend Christy, from Bside Metalworks, asked me to make her a Fancy Bird pillow with custom embroidered name and date at the top for her friend’s new baby. How lucky I am to have friends with such great ideas! Since the new baby was named Kate, too, how could I not make her a pillow? Here are a few images of the pillow in the works:

CustomDesign_pillows2First part of this pillow adventure was getting her name and date of birth embroidered on. I call this an adventure because I had never actually embroidered letters or anything before. It proved to be a good learning experience! Considering this was my first attempt, I think it came out pretty well.

CustomDesign_pillows3Once the lettering was complete, I went to work on laying out the appliqué fabric.

CustomDesign_pillows4Appliqué is all in place, sewn down with embellishments added and one feather complete. Just three more to go!

CustomDesign_pillows1Et viola! The finished pillow was 18″ square on a natural linen with cotton and felt appliqué. I’m so glad I had the opportunity to make such a fun pillow. I hope little Kate enjoys it for many years to come!
